Watford completed the signing of Abdoulaye Doucoure from Rennes in January 2016, with the midfielder signing a four-and-a-half year deal at Vicarage Road. The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Rennes and spent four years with the French club, making 80 appearances and scoring 13 goals in all competitions. Watford had originally wanted to sign Doucoure in the summer of 2015 and they finally got their man in January 2016, with the Frenchman moving to Vicarage Road on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He was to spend the second half of the 2015/16 season on loan at Granada, where he helped the Spanish side avoid relegation from La-Liga. He featured 15 times for Granada during his loan spell and faced off against the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in Spain. Doucoure linked up with the Watford squad permanently in the summer of 2016 and made his debut against Chelsea at Vicarage Road in August, where he came on as a second half substitute. After a tough start to the campaign, Doucoure forced his way into then manager Walter Mazzarri's plans, making 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring once.
